A crude contaminated soil, arising from an oil production zone in Tabasco, Mexico was studied. A sample of about 40 kg was dried and screened through meshes 10-100. Total petroleum hydrocarbons and 6 metals (Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, V and Zn) were determined to the different portions. For soil which passed mesh 10, six non-ionic, three anionic and one zwitterionic surfactant solutions (0.5%) were employed to wash the soil. Additional tests using surfactant salt mixtures and surfactants mixtures were carried out. Once the best soil washing conditions were identified, these experimental conditions were a... More →

Isotopic geochemistry methods received wide acceptance in different branches of geology in the second half of the XX century. In oil and gas geology, research on carbon isotopes of organic matter and bitumen not only generally corroborated the traditional views on the organic concept of the genesis of oil and gas, but also provided significant criteria for separating stages of hydrocarbon generation of various composition in agreement with the stages of sedime... The Actual Impacts of Oil and Gas Exploration and Development On Our Environment

Energy is the basis of American society. Energy cost controls our national economy, energy availability determines American foreign policy. We use energy without knowing where it comes from, how it is priced, or what the impacts of our use may be. We hope that this booklet will help you understand the importance of oil and gas to the national energy supply, where it comes from, and what the impacts are on the environment and on the economy from:

- Projected energy supply and demand
- Rol... More →

IAEA TECHNICAL REPORTS SERIES No. 419 - 2003

Industrial processes potentially involving NORM are addressed in this report. The emphasis is on processes involving NORM that, depending on country, may or may not be regulated in respect of their radioactive properties.

Products, by-products and residues associated with industrial processes involving NORM are of interest here in so far as they may become wastes eventually. Past and future practices are considered in the context of either remediation of previously disposed residues or management of newly generated residues. So... More →

Attribution of the responsibility for the cleanup and the design of a remedy were accomplished in less than 6 months. Numerous innovative technologies (see below) provided a high density of information to help direct sampling and analysis efforts. Mitigation efforts were completed a year after characterization was completed by the primary responsible party to eliminate the continuing source of coal tar to the Poudre River and restore the river channel to native condition. Sufficient information was developed to support closure plans for the landfill and to support redevelopment at the site. Th... More →

In the United States, more than 99% of the produced water generated onshore is managed onsite by the operators (API 2000). Under certain circumstances, however, operators prefer to send their produced water offsite to a commercial disposal facility. This is typically accomplished by having a truck periodically visit the well locations, remove the accumulated water, and haul it away to the destination facilities.

Offsite commercial disposal becomes the option of choice when small producers do not want to have the responsibility for constructing, operating, and closing onsite faciliti... More →

Zachary Shahan in following up on his post earlier on the subsidies to coal, also posted oil and natural gas subsidies. Just as with coal, oil and natural gas cause a tremendous amount of pollution(?), which results in sizable subsidies in the form of uncorrected externalities? Unlike coal, he is unaware of any comprehensive studies that attempt to quantify the health and environmental costs of oil or natural gas. However, there are documented effects and calculations. Starting with natural gas...

EPA 542-R-04-013 Emergency Response June 2004
Electrical systems that can be deployed at a landfill that has already been constructed apply an electrical potential across the non-conductive geomembrane liner to look for conductive leaks. Though generally used as a quality assurance method for leak detection in newly constructed landfill liners, these systems have been applied with some success to operating units. Systems of this type can easily be used to periodically monitor operating surface impoundments, and there is a well-established commercial vendor sector offering this service.... More →
