An editorial from the Aiken (South Carolins) Standard opines that despite the recent announcement that a search has begun for a repository to house the U.S. spent fuel, the taxpayers who forked over a collective $13 billion for the Yucca Mountain project are not smiling. The DoE reported Monday that it is following up by seeking communities and states interested in housing the U.S. spent fuel. The strategy outlines a need for a pilot interim storage facility, a larger interim storage facility, and long-term geologic repositories, said Frank Orr, the Under Secretary for Science and Energy.

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has published the final two volumes of its safety evaluation report for the proposed Yucca Mountain geologic nuclear waste repository, completing the technical safety review of the Department of Energy application.

The final volumes to be published are volume 2, covering repository safety before permanent closure, and volume 5, which covers proposed conditions on the construction authorization, likely licence specifications and overall conclusions. Dr. Conca reports that in Germany you can now go to a company called MAXATOMSTROM to purchase electricity that was produced completely from nuclear energy. Starting last week, MAXATOMSTROM offers a 100 per cent nuclear power plan, a first for Germany. Dr. Conca reports that X-energy, LLC announced that it has started the conceptual design phase for its Xe-100 high temperature gas-cooled (HTGR) pebble bed modular reactor. The Xe-100 is an innovative advanced nuclear power plant design, that uses its own made-in-the-USA proliferation-resistant spherical nuclear fuel elements, called pebbles.

WNN reports that global nuclear generating capacity increased slightly in 2015 as 10 new reactors began supplying electricity and 8 were permanently shut down, according to World Nuclear Association data.

William Freebairn and Wes Becker report that world nuclear generation tracked by Platts in 2014 rose 1 per cent compared to 2013, the first annual gain since the 2011 accident at Fukushima in Japan curbed global nuclear output sharply, an analysis shows. The analysis considers only the generation by the nuclear plants reporting gross generation to Platts. Those plants generated about 2.039 billion MWh in 2014.

Greg Klein reports that nuclear electricity output is set to increase at a faster rate over the next five years than the past two decades, the World Nuclear Association told a London symposium on September 10, 2015.

The World Nuclear Organization just updated its statements on the world supply of uranium. Current usage is about 66,000 tU per yr. Thus the world present measured resources of uranium (5.9 Mt) in the cost category around 1.5 times present spot prices and used only in conventional reactors, are enough to last for about 90 years. This represents a higher level of assured resources than is normal for most minerals.
