The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is very transparent in their labor counts by industry and occupation, which allows for AGI to prepare a realistic estimation of the size of the geoscience workforce in the U.S. Most other countries either do not provide the detail or transparency comparable to the U.S., leading to both data availability and definitional problems.

Most countries provide data in a highly aggregated form by industry, and only three industries where geoscientists work were in common across most countries, agriculture, mining, oil and gas, and professional science an... More →

This Special Publication of the Geological Society of London will be an important tool for geoscientists, aimed at increasing the awareness of their societal role and responsibility in conducting education, research and practice activities.

What are the responsibilities of a geoscientist? And what motivations are needed to push geoscientists to practice the Earth sciences in an ethical way? The major environmental challenges affecting human communities require not only a strictly scientific and technical preparation by the geoscientists, but also a reflection on their broader oblig... Hal Miller, President od SCA, opines that oil and gas companies have long relied on their most experienced and successful technical experts to conduct peer reviews and ensure functional excellence. In some larger companies, function heads lead corporate departments staffed with technical advisors who serve on quality assurance teams.

Working across organizational boundaries, these teams provide independent, global perspective, test the quality of interpretative work, review estimated resources and reserves, and cross-fertilize best practices.

Andrew Waltho reports in an article beginning on page 15 that employment prospects for Australian professional geoscientists declined further in the last quarter of 2015 according to the results of the latest, quarterly survey by the Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG). At 31 December 2015, the unemployment rate among Australian geoscientists was 18.7% and the underemployment rate was 23.4%. The combined unemployment and under-employment rate of 42.1% was the highest recorded since the AIG surveys commenced in mid-2009.

Less than 50% of self-employed geoscientists were able ... More →

Tim Worstall suggests that there is an interesting piece in the WSJ going over the salient points of the robots are going to steal all our jobs story. You know, once robots can do everything better than humans can then we will all be left starving in a howling wasteland as none of us will have any jobs any more. Because people are using the wrong mental model of what technology does to jobs. The assumption is that in the past, sure, new technology has destroyed jobs, but it has also created new jobs at the same time. All we have to hope is that the robots create more jobs than they destroy and... More →

Eliene Augenbraun, in a editorial in Scientific American, opines that scientists know how important their work is to America, and a science advocacy group thinks politicians should know it too.

Because researchers work on solving problems that every politician should care about, including climate risks, clean energy, new materials, emerging diseases and a wide range of technologies that can fuel economic growth, the Science Coalition, a group of universities that lobbies for federal investments in research, is sponsoring an event called Super Science Tuesday. It is a video compilati... More →

And for those that are the glass-half-empty type, the slump in prices has lasted so long that you may be passed the bury your head in the sand strategy and on to something has to be done. Either way, the scary headlines keep filling our newsfeeds and cluttering our mindshare and can make it feel hopeless, but it does not have to be. Here are 3 ways to make the downturn good for you and your organization.

Andrew Sharp opines that it may be a while before robots blend in at dinner parties, win an election, or discuss the nature of selfhood with their human handlers as envisioned in Isaac Asimov science fiction. But though they are yet to take over the world, robots are quietly taking over our jobs.

They do not look much like Asimov robots, but they aree working in manufacturing, warehouses, software. One example is the driverless trucks that could soon put millions of truckers out of work. There are even driverless tractors, as if we needed to get rid of more agriculture workers.
