John Rennie reported in 2002, and it is worth repeating again, that opponents of evolution want to make a place for creationism by tearing down real science, but their arguments do not hold up. When Charles Darwin introduced the theory of evolution through natural selection 143 years ago, the scientists of the day argued over it fiercely, but the massing evidence from paleontology, genetics, zoology, molecular biology and other fields gradually established the truth of evolution beyond reasonable doubt. "In the swamp forests, the peat surfaces have been deformed by vast numbers of dinosaur footprints [some of which he illustrates as photographs]. The footprints are depressions in the swamp peats that have been filled with flood-deposited sediment..... Peat is a water-saturated material that after compression tends to rebound to its undisturbed state. The abundance of well-defined tracks suggests that they were made just prior to the deposition of the sediment and that dinosaurs were very abundant in the swamp forests... Occasionally, tracks of three-toed dinosaurs [probably hadrosaurs], ... More →

Sheril Kirshenbaum, of Scientific American, opines that since 1994, Gallup has been tracking U.S. attitudes of the general public on nuclear energy. Last week, they released new survey results suggesting the majority of Americans oppose nuclear energy. But do they?

On the surface, it is clear that something has shifted, but polling is subject to many influences and The UT Energy Poll results from January tell a bit of a different story favoring nuclear energy. Why the disparity? Anyone paying attention to polls through this primary political season knows that surveys are far from pe... More →

Mick Cullen opines that he has had so many conversations or email exchanges with students in the last few years wherein he angers them by indicating that they are simply saying, This is my opinion does not preclude a connected statement from being dead wrong. It still baffles me that some feel those four words somehow give them carte blanche to spout batshit oratory or prose. And it really scares me that some of those students think education that challenges their ideas is equivalent to an attack on their beliefs.

Jef Rouner also opines that he spends far more time arguing on the In... More →
