Leia Toovey reports that there was a lot of optimism at the start of 2017 for spot uranium prices, with the commodity rapidly rebounding after crashing to a 17-year low in December, but in the end, the commodity rally stalled and average uranium prices in the first-half of 2017 were 14% lower than in 2016.

Last week was another lackluster one for uranium spot prices, but they managed to hold above $20 per lb for the second-straight week. After sitting below $20 for most of the month of June, with buying interest completely evaporating as soon as sellers pushed for prices above $20, ... More →

Freeman Ngulu reports that Deep Yellow Limited announced that more drilling currently happening in the Namib Naukluft National Park holds good promise for finding more sizable uranium deposits. The first stage of a 10,000 meter drilling plan started last month on EPL3496 and EPL3497 by Deep Yellow wholly-owned subsidiary, Reptile Uranium Namibia.

According to Deep Yellow, the EPLs which are in good standing and are valid until 05 June this year were originally granted to Reptile Uranium Namibia in 2006. An application for the renewal of the Exclusive Exploration Licences has been su... More →

Windhoek-Swakop Uranium produced its first drum of uranium ore concentrates (yellowcake) from its Husab mine on the evening of Friday, December 30, 2016. Capital investment in the project to date exceeds US$2 billion. Speaking at a presentation to mark the occasion, CEO Zheng Keping indicated that the Husab mine is in production, bringing new vigour and vitality to the ancient Namib desert.

The first production marks a significant milestone in development of the mine, which began 10 years ago. The initial exploration and discovery took place in 2006. Following resource definition a... More →

The Fission 3.0 Corp. $0.5 million, summer exploration program will focus on the Llama mineralized trend which had returned numerous high-grade assays. The 1,200 meter drill contract will consist of 12 holes of HQ diameter core drilling. The program follows compilation of mapping and prospecting work, conducted by Fission 3 award-winning technical team, and will focus on an anomalous mineralized 8 km NE-oriented corridor containing numerous anomalous uranium in outcrop trenches (chips and channel samples) values assaying about 2% U3O8 including a maximum of 24.48% U3O8. This same corridor incl... More →

Jocelyn Aspa reports that in northern Saskatchewan, tucked away behind forests and largely inaccessible by most methods of transportation, is the Athabasca Basin. The region, which covers approximately 100,000 square kilometers in Saskatchewan and a small part of Alberta, is home to the largest source of high-grade uranium in the world. It supplies 20% of global production.

While the mining area for high-grade uranium has historically been on the eastern side of the Basin, discoveries on the western side of the basin are growing rapidly. In particular, the outside mark of the Basin ... More →

Fission Uranium has released assay results from 68 holes of its recent winter drilling program. Of particular note are holes that returned composited assay intervals including an astounding 9.34 percent U3O8 over 10.0m and 26.32 per cent U3O8 over 1.0m within an interval of 3.78 percent U3O8 over 49.0m, which returned composited assay intervals of 10.35 percent U3O8 over 14.0m within a larger interval of 3.96 percent U3O8 over 40.0m. Six holes of the eight holes returned substantial high-grade assays and all eight holes intersected widespread mineralization.

Dr. Conca indicates that the common wisdom, that limited uranium supplies will prevent a substantial increase in nuclear energy, is incorrect. We have plenty of uranium, enough for the next 10,000 years. But uranium supplies are governed by the same market forces as any other commodity, and projections only include what is cost-effective today. Like natural gas, numerous sources of uranium abound.

The worlds fastest-growing energy sources are renewables and nuclear, but both are only increasing by 2.5% per year. Fossil fuels, however, will still be supplying well over 70% of the wor... More →

In a recent interview with Chang, he updates earlier conclusions with the following ...

1. China will have a major demand for uranium as the number of its nuclear reactors increases from 36 today to 52 by 2020.

2. The global push toward cleaner and greener energy is good for uranium. Nuclear is the only form of base-load energy that emits zero carbon.

3. As contracts start rolling off in bunches, utilities will be buying on spot and aggressively contracting to shore-up their future needs.

K. R. Beisner, et al., (2016) report that the processes that affect water chemistry as the groundwater flows from recharge areas through breccia-pipe uranium deposits in the Grand Canyon region of the southwestern U.S. are not well understood. Pigeon Spring had elevated uranium in 1982 (44 ug/L), compared to other perched springs (2.7 to 18 ug/L), prior to mining operations at the nearby Pigeon Mine.

Perched groundwater springs in an area around the Pigeon Mine were sampled between 2009 and 2015 and compared with material from the Pigeon Mine to better understand the geochemistry a... More →

Smart, et al., (1976) reports that there have been many major phases in the history of exploration for uranium in Australia. In the early 1950s the Rum Jungle and South Alligator River valley uranium fields were discovered. The Rum Jungle deposits were mined between 1953 and 1963 and the South Alligator River valley deposits were mined between 1954 and 1964. During this period most exploration was directed towards the country between the two areas, out little attention was given to the area east of the South Alligator River. The region was, however, mapped in reconnaissance style at 1:250 000 ... More →

Hans Peter Zihlmann reports the future of uranium is looking very bright with 66 reactors under construction globally, particularly in China, India and the U.A.E. Saudi Arabia has signed agreements to build 16 reactors by 2032. So the demand for uranium will keep rising.

As more time passes the negative sentiment about nuclear energy generated by the Fukushima disaster is slowly changing. The alternatives to nuclear power, coal and oil, are both heavy carbon emitters and polluters and so there is growing environmental pressure to switch to nuclear power.
