5th March, 2009 - Research Consortium for Methane Hydrate Resources in Japan

These findings have encouraged Japan a potential of methane hydrate as one of the future energy resources. METI compiled in 2001 a long term national plan called "National Methane Hydrate R&D Program", which intended to find and clarify challenges and to develop technologies for possible production of methane from hydrate.

"Research Consortium for Methane Hydrate Resources in Japan"(also known as MH21), an industry-government-academia collaboration research group, was esta... More →

Gas hydrates – natural gas and water frozen together into a solid substance – are common in arctic permafrost regions and in sediments in the ocean's deep waters. Research is now underway to better understand this vast, untapped resource: how natural gas hydrates form, where they are located and how they could be used as a future source of natural gas.

Index / Gas Hydrates / Development Technology

The 63 technical research papers and accompanying databases presented in this publication are far reaching in their impact, and provide an extraordinary level of detail on one of the world's most concentrated gas hydrate deposits. Important new work and insight are presented on gas hydrate production testing. New studies are reported on in situ physical and geophysical properties of gas hydrate, with complementary studies on an extensive coring program. New appraisals are presented on the relevance of gas hydrate to energy, climate, and geohazard research. We are proud of the efforts of all 30... More →
