Awareness of the environmental drawbacks of fossil fuels coal, oil and natural gas is on the rise. So is interest in eco-friendly alternatives for meeting society energy needs. Although fossil fuels generally remain abundant and cheap, rival energies have gained traction in recent years amid an unprecedented wave of green energy investments. Among the most promising of the rising green stars is geothermal energy. The advantages linked to this abundant subterranean resource are many. Check out our list of the top ten reasons we should consider a future in which geothermal energy figures promine... More →

Electricity from geothermal energy had a modest start in 1904 at Larderello in the Tuscany region of northwestern Italy with an experimental 10 kW-generator. Today, this form of renewable energy has grown to 8771 MW in 25 countries producing an estimated 54,793 GWh/yr. These "earth-heat" units operate with an average capacity factor of 71%; though, many are "on-line" over 95% of the time, providing almost continuous base-load power. This electricity production is serving an equivalent 60 million people throughout the world, which is about one percent of our planet's populat... More →

Geothermal Areas are specific locations of geothermal (high-heat) potential of the groundwater (e.g., Coso Geothermal Area). The base set of geothermal areas used in this database came from the 253 geothermal areas identified by the USGS in their 2008 Resource Assessment.

Additional geothermal areas were added, as needed, based on a literature search and on projects listed in the 2011 database of funded projects.

Listed by name of geothermal area:

Megan Geuss reports that most people think of Iceland when they think of geothermal power. On that island, approximately 90 percent of homes are heated by geothermal energy. But some 12 gigawatts of geothermal power are generated worldwide, and the US is one of the largest producers of it, generating nearly 3.4 gigawatts in 2013.

The Ormat Steamboat Complex is within the Reno city limits, and it is made up of seven smaller plants that collectively generate 78 megawatts of power. A typical coal-fired power plant can generate around 660 megawatts of power, so the Ormat 78 megawatts ar... More →

Geothermal energy is a major resource and potential source of low emissions renewable energy suitable for base-load electricity generation and direct-use applications. Australia has significant potential geothermal resources associated with buried high heat-producing granites and lower temperature geothermal resources associated with naturally-circulating waters in aquifers deep in sedimentary basins. Most current geothermal projects in Australia are still at proof-of-concept or early commercial demonstration stage. Demonstration of the commercial viability of geothermal energy in Australia wi... The Dixie Valley Geothermal Area is located near Fallon, Nevada. It lies along a range front fault that runs between the base of the Stillwater Range and the northwestern edge of Dixie Valley. The fault line and thermally active area are roughly 30 km long. It stretches from the Dixie Valley Geothermal power plant on the north side of the geothermal zone to the Dixie Hot Springs Geothermal Area on the south side. The Dixie Meadows Geothermal Area also lies within this thermally active fault zone. There are a few other hot springs nearby - Seven Devils, Sou, and Hyder hot springs. There are als... More →

Dominica long-standing efforts to develop its geothermal resource have been well documented. Nearly a decade ago an exploratory drilling program confirmed the existence of a viable high-temperature resource. Since then, Dominica bid to harness its geothermal has seen highs and lows but ultimately the project at Wotten Waven Laudat while it has attracted interest but has failed to secure a developer. Now, a rebooted and multi-phased approach supported by The World Bank and other partners is breathing new life into the project.
