In 2014, global gold production increased by 2 per cent from the previous year, according to a January 2015 U.S. Geological Survey report.

While China kept its place as the single-largest producer of gold, it was certainly not the only country to contribute to the 2014 growth. Production increases took place in that country, as well as several others, including Australia, Canada, the Dominican Republic and Russia. This swelling of production outweighed some of the dips that other countries experienced, such as Peru, Tanzania, South Africa and the U.S.

Charlotte McLeod reports that yet despite its popularity, the gold price is currently languishing well below its 2011 peak of nearly $1,900 per ounce. It took a steep dive midway through 2013, reaching about the $1,250 mark, and then dropped below $1,200 at the start of 2014. Since then, it has continued to fall, and in November 2015 was trading just below $1,100.

Many initially expected the the lower gold price to lead to mine closures. However, as yet most gold producers have opted to cut costs rather than shut down their operations entirely.

Jeb Handwerger reports that gold stocks have been trading at huge discounts for years, but even rock-bottom prices could not entice takeover bids until the market hit bottom. The bottom is now here, says Jeb Handwerger, founder of GoldStockTrades.com, and M and As are off to a roaring start this year. Handwerger predicts a new record gold price within 18 months, and presents a host of gold and other metal equities poised to take off in 2015.

Andrew Watson reports that the Pebble deposit is a supermassive deposit. This project would have a 20 to 40 year resource life with the mining current techniques. The Pebble Cu-Au-Mo-Ag Porphyry deposit in southwest Alaska is one such deposit, with a global resource of just under 11 billion tonnes (measured, indicated and inferred) with a contained metal resource of 70,000,000,000 pounds copper, 107,000,000 ounces gold ($107 Billion), 5,580,000,000 pounds molybdenum and 510,000,000 ounces silver. Henry Lazenby reports that the TSX- and ASX-listed Besra on Wednesday announced that it had resumed production at its Bong Mieu gold mine, in central Vietnam, after a hiatus of almost 11 months. Operations at Bong Mieu were suspended in November last year following substantial damage to local roads and infrastructure by several typhoons. Operations restarted briefly in June, only to be stopped a month later by the application of coercive measures by the Quang Nam Tax Department.

Besra said the coercive measures had now ended, providing it with the opportunity to restart the mine and... More →

Richard Poulden, CEO of Black Swan in Dubai, reports that it has just hit the fan. In the 1976 film Network, newscaster Howard Beale encourages the U.S. citizens to stand up for themselves, open a window and shout out .... I am mad as hell and I am not going to take this anymore!

All over the West this is how people feel. That is what the BREXIT vote is really about ... it has precious little to do with an In/Out vote on the EU and certainly it is not the result of any rational analysis on the part of either side of the campaign.

Philip Whiterow reports that Caledonia Mining intends to double production at its Blanket mine in Zimbabwe after a strategic review indicated expansion of the mine was the best use of its funds. The gold producer was considering expanding outside of Zimbabwe, but the review concluded the best potential returns lay with exploiting the additional resources at the mine, which is 49% owned and operated by Caledonia.

Blanket is forecast to produce 40,000 ounces of gold this year, but through a US$70m investment output will rise to around 80,000 ounces. Most of the additional gold will c... More →

Schultze, et al., report that archaeological excavations at a U-shaped pyramid in the northern Lake Titicaca Basin of Peru have documented a continuous 5-m-deep stratigraphic sequence of metalworking remains. The sequence begins in the first millennium AD and ends in the Spanish Colonial period ca. AD 1600. The earliest dates associated with silver production are 1960 40 BP (2-sigma cal. and 40 BC to AD 120) and 1870 40 BP (2-sigma cal. Charlotte McLeod reports that at the end of 2015, most gold market watchers had one concern ... the U.S. Federal Reserve. Expectations that the central bank would raise interest rates were running high, and the general consensus was that an increase would not bode well for the yellow metal. A month and a half into 2016, it is clear that the situation did not play out the way many feared it would. While the Fed did raise interest rates midway through December, gold has not suffered as a result. In fact, on February 11 it blasted through the psychologically important $1,200-per-ounce level to hi... More →

In the last 16 years, the gold mining industry has failed to replace more than half the ounces mined. Collective mine life has fallen with the inclusion of lower gold grades in gold reserve calculations. The number of ounces being replaced by exploration has nosedived and supply is heading for a sharp fall.

Although exploration budgets peaked at $6 billion in 2011, exploration success has been dismal. As a result, the industry bellwether stocks are now forecasting substantial... More →

As the Cyprus drama and other macro events play out and distort normal macro economic signals to varying degrees in the short term, let's review the 'real price' of counter-cyclical gold vs. the cyclical industrial metals.

Au-GYX bottomed hard in February, MACD sported a positive divergence and now the ratio has turned up hard, despite the economic growth signs in the U.S. Global growth, especially in materials-intensive China has decelerated.

Regardless, the Cyprus hysteria has driven the ratio up to an over bought level at the SMA 200, which is a logical area for a pull... More →

Andrew Watson opines that in his article called - Grasberg Part 1 - he discussed the social and cultural aspects of the Grasberg deposit and outlined its long and fascinating history. In this article he summarizes the geology of this deposit.

The first striking fact is how young the deposit is. The mountain spine of New Guinea formed in the Middle Miocene and is less than 12 Million years old. The deposit itself is 3 million years old. He suggests that porphyry copper deposits generally form at 3-4 kilometers ( about 2 miles) at depth, which implies some 3,000-4,000 meters of erosio... More →
