Will Marshall reports that Planet Labs announced that they have entered into an agreement with Google, wherein Planet will acquire the Terra Bella business including the SkySat constellation of satellites, and Google upon closing, will enter into a multi-year contract to purchase Earth-imaging data from Planet.

The SkySat constellation of 7 high-resolution satellites is complementary to Planet existing medium resolution 60-satellite fleet. The former enable regular, rapidly updated snapshots of select areas of the globe at sub-meter resolution, the latter regular, global coverage at... More →

Mark Campbell reports that mining in Egypt is a risky investment because you would be dealing with the Egyptian military not a ministry of mining or a scientific organization. Last year, four mining companies left Egypt, their projects were rejected by military order.

They then searched for any foreign direct investment to restore the national gold reserve to its previous level. They reviewed oil and mining contracts to secure more income for the country. But after the Egyptian revelation failed, the Egyptian Armed Forces (EAF) are now working hard to generate revenues via The Egypt... More →

Wishbone Gold plc is a gold shipper based in Dubai that matches buyers with small producers in Africa and South America. It began operating in August and shipped 105 kilos (3,380 ounces) in total in December, its peak month.

Richard Poulden, chief executive, said that overall 2016 had been a successful year for Wishbone with good volumes. Wishbone has supply agreements with miners based in Peru, Ghana, Chile and Colombia.

Subsidiary Black Sand management visited Peru and Chile recently, which would provide more opportunities for the company said Poulden while its early st... More →

Richard Kettler, et al., report that the Pueblo Viejo district is one of the largest producers of precious metals in the world, yielding more than 11,000 kg of Au annually. Gold mineralization at Pueblo Viejo is hosted in spilite, and coarse elastic and finely laminated, fine-grained carbonaceous sedimentary rocks of the Lower Cretaceous Los Ranchos Formation.

Mineralization was accompanied by sulfidation as evidenced by 1) the occurrence of siderite distal to mineralization and pyrite proximal to mineralization, 2) increased S over Fe ratios associated with Au mineralization, 3) t... More →

Andrew G. Tomkins reports that gold has historically been a key strategic commodity, and the study of gold deposit formation has long been investigated. Debate on the genesis of so-called orogenic gold deposits (more than 75% of gold recovered through history) continues largely because it is difficult to reliably identify the source of gold.

In this paper, the author identifies a geochemical tracer in orogenic gold deposits, ethane (C2H6), which is found in carbonaceous metasedimentary rocks. Orogenic gold deposits dominantly form in metamorphic rocks in the mid-to shallow crust (5... More →

Ravi Anand, et al., report that significant Au discoveries are becoming less common because the remaining prospective, underexplored areas are obscured by transported cover. At the Moolart Well (Western Australia), secondary Au deposits hosted in transported pisolitic ferricrete and saprolite are overlain by younger transported cover. They show how Au has been, and is being, dispersed and concentrated in these deposits and the overlying younger transported cover and biota during the evolution of the landscape. They identified coarse (>400 um), Ag-rich, primary, angular Au accumulated residu... More →

Donald Trump U.S. presidential win will let Northern Dynasty Minerals proceed with an application for a copper and gold mine in Alaska that has been stalled almost three years by environmental regulators aiming to protect the world biggest sockeye salmon fishery.

Ronald Thiessen, CEO and President, said he expected the U.S. EPA to announce in the first quarter of 2017 that it will let the application process proceed for the controversial project. He said the company has held discussions with Trump transition team, including Myron Ebell, who heads the EPA transition.

Andrew Watson reports that there are big deposits and then there are supermassive deposits. A big deposit will have a good 20-40 year resource life at with mining current techniques. A supermassive one, has the resources that last for centuries.

The Pebble deposit, a Cu-Au-Mo-Ag Porphyry located in southwest Alaska, is one such discovery, with a global resource of just under 11 billion tonnes (measured, indicated and inferred) with a contained metal resource of 70,000,000,000 pounds copper, 107,000,000 ounces gold, 5,580,000,000 pounds molybdenum, and 510,000,000 ounces silver. Martin Creamer reports that gold is being discovered at a fraction of the rate needed to replenish reserves. In the last 16 years, the gold mining industry has failed to replace more than half the ounces mined. Collective mine life has fallen with the inclusion of lower gold grades in gold reserve calculations. The number of ounces being replaced by exploration has nosedived and supply is heading for a sharp fall.

Although exploration budgets peaked at $6 billion in 2011, exploration success has been dismal. As a result, the industry bellwether stocks are now forecasting substantial... More →

Moriarty opines that relationships exist between both similar and dissimilar commodities. The ratio of the number of ounces of silver it takes to buy one ounce of gold varied from about 17 to 1 in January of 1980 to over 100 to 1 in early 1991. We view both metals as precious and having some aspects of money. But the ratio changes a lot and that creates an opportunity to profit without needing the ability to predict direction of price movement. You do not need to speculate on the commodities going up or down, only that they regress to a mean.

And it is not necessary for commodities ... More →

Carol A. Schultze, et al., report that archaeological excavations at a U-shaped pyramid in the northern Lake Titicaca Basin of Peru have documented a continuous 5-m-deep stratigraphic sequence of metalworking remains. The sequence begins in the first millennium AD and ends in the Spanish Colonial period ca. AD 1600. The earliest dates associated with silver production are 1960 40 BP (2-sigma cal. and 40 BC to AD 120) and 1870 40 BP (2-sigma cal. AD 60 to 240) representing the oldest known silver smelting in South America.

Clive Maund opines that having hit a target, silver has formed what is believed to be an intermediate top over the past five weeks or so, which it should soon start to descend. On its three-month chart, Maund sees this presumed topping pattern started with the appearance of a prominent Gravestone Doji or Shooting Star candlestick early in July, with its negative implications being amplified by its having occurred on very high volume.

While moving averages are in bullish alignment, the now yawning gap between the 50-day and 200-day makes a correction likely. After dipping back durin... More →

Bull market corrections can be very sharp but short lived, therefore, the next cycle bottom could be an excellent entry point. Meanwhile we have a set up to short gold with tight stops.

After preliminary exploration has been completed, the next step in the life cycle of a gold mine is resource definition. The processes in reserve definition are similar to preliminary exploration, and there is considerable overlap between the two phases.

However, in resource definition, the exploration company has reason to believe that their property contains a mineral reserve. Therefore, the company will spend more money on intensive and technical exploration techniques. All over the West this is how people feel. That is what the BREXIT vote is really about ... it has precious little to do with an In/Out vote on the EU and certainly it is not the result of any rational analysis on the part of either side of the campaign.

Arthur Leger, V.P. of Exploration for Atoka Gold, blogs that many areas are not good places to explore for gold, etc. He opines that the duties of an exploration geologist are not only to discover ore but to find an economical ore deposit that will make money for a company and investors. Large amounts of money and time are wasted on exploring for metal deposits in areas that will not allow mining.

Due to environmental concerns, even if a major economical discovery is made, it is likely the local or state authorities would never allow development. The following are a few examples of... More →
