A recent study by Metals Economics Group (MEG) shows that between 1997 and 2011, a total of 99 new gold discoveries, each containing at least 2 million oz of gold, were made. The report, "Strategies for Gold Reserves Replacement: The Costs of Finding and Acquiring Gold", says that by the end of 2011, these same deposits contained 743 million oz of gold in reserves, resources, and past production. The Americas hold the greatest share of gold in these discoveries, not surprisingly, according to MEG, as the Americas have accounted for more than half the industry's discovery-orientated g... Andrew Watson reports that there are big deposits and then there are supermassive deposits. A big deposit will have a good 20-40 year resource life at with mining current techniques. A supermassive one, has the resources that last for centuries.

The Pebble deposit, a Cu-Au-Mo-Ag Porphyry located in southwest Alaska, is one such discovery, with a global resource of just under 11 billion tonnes (measured, indicated and inferred) with a contained metal resource of 70,000,000,000 pounds copper, 107,000,000 ounces gold, 5,580,000,000 pounds molybdenum, and 510,000,000 ounces silver. The New York Fed holds gold that has been deposited by other countries for safe keeping. During the Cold War, Germany moved much of its gold to New York in case the USSR invaded Germany.

There is approximately 1,536 tons of German gold held by the Federal Reserve in New York. In 2013, the Bundesbank, the German central bank, announced it planned to repatriate some of its gold holdings from the New York Federal Reserve and the Bank of France. The Bundesbank i... More →

Arthur Leger, V.P. of Exploration for Atoka Gold, blogs that many areas are not good places to explore for gold, etc. He opines that the duties of an exploration geologist are not only to discover ore but to find an economical ore deposit that will make money for a company and investors. Large amounts of money and time are wasted on exploring for metal deposits in areas that will not allow mining.

Due to environmental concerns, even if a major economical discovery is made, it is likely the local or state authorities would never allow development. The following are a few examples of... More →

The unemployment rate dropped from 5.1% to 5%, the lowest level since February 2008. The strong result all but guarantees a December interest rate rise, with ANZ Research saying that the markets are now pricing in close to a 70% chance of a hike next month. Jeff Desjardins presents an interesting storyboard describing why gold could be a good investment in 2016 ...

1. Financial experts often mention that buying and holding stocks through good and bad times is the best way to guarantee returns. Investors that bought equities before the Financial Crisis have had a 20.2% return up until January 25, 2016. They stayed the course and were rewarded with an eventual return. However, those that held gold during that same time period until today have had a 48.6% return, which is more than double that of the general market. This is even true with... More →

W.C. Pat Shanks III, et al., report that Volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits, also known as volcanic-hosted massive sulfide, volcanic-associated massive sulfide, or seafloor massive sulfide deposits, are important sources of copper, zinc, lead, gold, and silver (Cu, Zn, Pb, Au, and Ag). These deposits form at or near the seafloor where circulating hydrothermal fluids driven by magmatic heat are quenched through mixing with bottom waters or porewaters in near-seafloor lithologies. Massive sulfide lenses vary widely in shape and size and may be podlike or sheetlike. They are generally st... More →

Publicly traded gold companies offer investors a quick non-GAAP formula to give investors a glimpse at their costs per ounce called "cash costs." This measure may vary slightly from company to company (it is non-GAAP after all) but it is generally their "mining costs" (cost to operate their mines, process the ore, pay miners, etc.) divided by the amount of gold equivalent ounces produced.

But unfortunately this measure is misleading, and selectively reports some costs and ignores other, which ends up not giving investors a true picture into the cost it takes to p... More →

Leia Michele Toovey opines that the first step in developing a gold mine is selecting an area for exploration. While this may seem boring and irrelevant to an investor looking into gold mining, this preliminary phase is the very foundation of a successful mining venture. There are dozens of ways in which an error in this crucial time could cause major headaches down the road. A critical misstep by an exploration company could in turn impact share-value. Therefore, it is important for an educated investor to understand the basic process involved in staking a mining claim.

After preliminary exploration has been completed, the next step in the life cycle of a gold mine is resource definition. The processes in reserve definition are similar to preliminary exploration, and there is considerable overlap between the two phases.

However, in resource definition, the exploration company has reason to believe that their property contains a mineral reserve. Therefore, the company will spend more money on intensive and technical exploration techniques.

The resource definition phase not only involves further analysis of the size and grade of the minera... More →

Dylan Breslin reports that for investment purposes, mineral exploration companies are often divided into two categories ... Greenfield and Brownfield exploration stocks. Greenfield Exploration relies on a conceptual idea about where a mineral deposit might be found and how much time and money is required to verify if mineralization is there. This form of exploration is considered the riskiest but also can be the most profitable usually because, in general, there are lower land costs. This is also termed grass-root exploration. Brownfield exploration geologists look for deposits near or adjacen... More →

Moriarty opines that relationships exist between both similar and dissimilar commodities. The ratio of the number of ounces of silver it takes to buy one ounce of gold varied from about 17 to 1 in January of 1980 to over 100 to 1 in early 1991. We view both metals as precious and having some aspects of money. But the ratio changes a lot and that creates an opportunity to profit without needing the ability to predict direction of price movement. You do not need to speculate on the commodities going up or down, only that they regress to a mean.

And it is not necessary for commodities ... More →
