Mark Tingay reports that the latest version of the World Stress Map Project has been officially released this week. This is the 30th anniversary of the project, and sees a big boost in data over the prior release in 2008. The latest version of the World Stress Map contains 42,870 stress data records, which is approximately double that of the prior release, and about 10 times more than the first release over 25 years ago.

The World Stress Map Project started back in 1986, and was the brainchild of Professor Karl Fuchs and the International Lithosphere Program, who asked Mary-Lou Zoba... More →

Robin Andrews says that so you have survived the explosive blast, the lava bombs, the pyroclastic flows and the lava that has oozed dramatically down the slopes of the volcano. Unfortunately, the volcano may not be done with you just yet. If those lava flows came to a rest on a slope, and you are in an environment that tends to get a lot of rain, you may be in trouble, volcanic mudslides are a hazard too, and they are often the deadliest part of the eruption cycle.

Lahars, which comes from the Japanese word for flowing lava, are much like normal mudslides. They are a thick, concrete... More →

Stephen D. Kollie reports that Henry Michael Fayiah, a Mittal Steel geologist, at Yekepa Mine, Liberia was killed when taking samples from the base of the iron ore stockpile for studies of ore density, moisture content when the a slide occurred covering Mr. Fayiah. Efforts to rescue him in time failed, primarily because he was alone at the time of the slide. This is the first fatality in the mine area and management is investigating the cause. With the growing population on Earth clustered increasingly along coastlines, tsunami hazards are of concern worldwide. Within the framework of the bilateral agreement between the Geological Societies of London and Japan, a linked pair of one-day symposia is bringing together geoscientists and risk assessors to assess tsunami hazard in an integrated manner, with a view to facilitating more quantitative and evidence-based evaluation of their scale, nature, location and timescales.

The first symposium was hosted by the Geological Society of Japan and took place in Kagoshima in Septe... More →

In May 2013, an Alpha Natural Resources underground mine encountered an active, unmapped gas well. Mining ceased due to high methane levels. There were no injuries and no ignition. Alpha Natural Resources asks the question, How Can Such Incidents Be Prevented. Utilizing CORESafety Module 4 on Fatality Prevention and Risk Management, the Plan, Do, Check, Act process helps identify risk, assess and prioritize, apply controls, and verify that the controls are effective.

David Jacobson reports that in a manuscript accepted for publication yesterday, new evidence for 10 ground-rupturing earthquakes prior to 1857, along the Big Bend of the Southern San Andreas Fault was presented. The study, headed by Dr. Katherine Scharer at the USGS in Pasadena, examined the earthquake history of the San Andreas near Frazier Mountain in northeast Kern County. This area last ruptured in the 1857 M=7.7-7.9 Fort Tejon earthquake.

One of the reasons why this location is of importance is because in Southern California, the Big Bend, Carrizo, and Mojave sections of the Sa... More →

How familiar are you with the safety and health management system at your mining company?

A successful system starts by establishing a benchmark, a full understanding of past accidents and fatalities, and the measures you have committed to taking in order to prevent them in the future.

Frank Hanagarne, senior vice president and chief operating officer at Coeur Mining, Inc., believes continuous safety improvement requires companies to set a benchmark and regularly discuss how to improve it. The CORESafety structure is designed to enable us to audit our performance or hav... More →

Gwynn Guilford reports that Hawaiian mosquitoes have been busy it seems. Local health authorities just confirmed 10 new cases of dengue fever, an excruciating disease nicknamed breakbone fever. That brings the total to 23 so far this year. But there is something especially worrisome about these new 10 cases, though. They came from the bites of local mosquitoes. This ups the risk of an epidemic - an ominous prospect for a state that earns nearly 20% of its GDP from tourism. After the first dengue cases were confirmed in a 2001 epidemic that tore through the island of Maui, the average number of... More →

Osterman Research (2015) cited a number of example of cybersecurity issues common today. An attorney in the greater San Diego area opened an attachment in a phishing email that he thought was sent to him by the US Postal Service. The attachment installed malware on his computer, and shortly thereafter he found that $289,000 had been transferred from his firm account to a bank in China.

An email attack on Fazio Mechanical, an HVAC contractor in Sharpsburg, VA, was able to penetrate the organizational email defenses and infected at least one computer with a variant of the ZeuS banking... More →

The editors at Scientific American were compelled to announce that the world is at war. Some might quibble with the characterization of malicious hacking as warfare, preferring phrases such as cyberespionage or cyberconflict. But when governments, industry and individuals are under constant attack by antagonists from all corners of the globe, marauders who use the Internet to steal vital information, sabotage critical operations and recruit terrorists, this means war. It is high time for an internationally coordinated response.
