The Division of Environmental Geosciences (DEG) offers AAPG members an opportunity to increase their knowledge about the environment and the petroleum industry. DEG approaches basic environmental issues that impact the energy industry from the perspective of geological, geochemical, geophysical and hydrogeological principles and methodologies that are applied to understanding and then solving the environmental issues typically involved in energy exploration and production. This includes conventional, unconventional, and alternative energy resources.... More →

In Situ Chemical Oxidation (ISCO) entails the introduction of chemical oxidant into the subsurface for the oxidation and treatment of organic constituents of concern (COCs). This paper presents a case study that involved bench-scale testing and field demonstration of ISCO via Mechanical Auger Mixing (MAM) that resulted in over 95% removal of chlorinated and nonchlorinated chemicals identified as recalcitrant. Also presented are ISCO effects on dissolved oxygen levels in the underlying aquifer. Mechanical mixing of soils with an oxidant solution is an improved remedial strategy that facilitates... More →

The USGS reports that past fireworks displays are the probable cause of elevated concentrations of perchlorate in groundwater and surface water within Mount Rushmore National Memorial. It is a compound used as an oxidizing agent in fireworks, and is a common component in rocket fuels, explosives and certain nitrogen fertilizers. At high levels in drinking water, it can interfere with the function of the human thyroid gland. However, the drinking water at Mount Rushmore meets current regulations and is safe for public consumption.

Aerial fireworks displays took place at th... More →

The Project, proposed by a public-private partnership between lead agency Santa Margarita Water District and the overlying landowner, Cadiz, Inc. seeks to beneficially use and prevent the loss of groundwater, some portion of which would otherwise ...
