Every day, over one thousand cubic kilometres of water evaporates from the land and sea. The water vapour condenses into the tiny droplets of liquid that make up clouds, and eventually it falls back to the earth as rain, hail or snow. Every three millennia, this overturning of water from ground to sky and back again recycles an amount of water equivalent to all the world's oceans.

It is called the hydrological cycle, and all life on the planet depends on it. The hydrological cycle creates fresh water from the salty stuff of the oceans, because the salt is left behind when sea water ... More →

Barbara Mahler and Jon Campbell report that about 115 million people, more than one-third of the nation's population rely on groundwater for drinking water. As the National population grows, the need for high-quality drinking-water supplies becomes even more urgent.

About 43 million people rely on groundwater from private wells. About 20% of the groundwater samples from parts of aquifers used for drinking water contained a contaminant from geologic or man-made sources at a level exceeding a potential human-health concern. 6,600 wells were sampled for this study. 1.3 million chemical... Henry Wise, P.G., CPG, and a Remedial Services Specialist for SWS Environmental Services, suggests that you might not have known that geologists are often used during emergency responses, site investigations, and remediation of soil and groundwater. When contamination is found in a waterway or sewer for example, the source is not always known. Geologists are experts in determining contamination migration pathways so that their source can be discovered quickly, stopped, and the plume contained. Some of the tools at their disposal include LEL(Lower Explosive Limit) and PID (Photoionization Dete... More →

According to Global Construction Review, in an effort to hold off projections that the UAE could run out of groundwater in 14 years, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) have been hired to carry out detailed modelling studies to evaluate the effectiveness of a artificial mountain. The idea is that the mountain would force air masses to rise, which could then be seeded to produce increased rainfall.

Increased precipitation would help the UAE as currently groundwater makes up 70% of the emirates water supply, with 33 desalination plants providing 24%, and wastewater 6%... More →
