These are hard times for some in the mining industry, but it is time we leave the gloom-and-doom speak and start thinking (and acting) on ways to improve. The un-named blogger always likes to pick ideas from well thought, well structured texts. He has just come across some recent (2015) BCG publications on the current state of affairs in Exploration and Mining. the first one is presented in the I2M Web Portal here ....

Value Creation in Mining 2015 - Beyond Basic Productivity- BCG - Beyond Basic Productivity, Aug, 2015.

Diamonds (and rumors of their existence) are not new in Mozambique since colonial times. Later on, kimberlite were discovered and confirmed by Soviet teams in the (then already independent) country. Until now, the country has seen no industrial diamond production or large scale diamond garimpo activity. That is perhaps about to change.

Mustang Resources Limited - an Australian company - has just announced the discovery of alluvial diamonds in the gravels of their concessions along the Save River, in southwestern Mozambique. Full news releases - Mustang Discovers Diamonds - JORC Tab... More →

Megan Van Wyngaardt reports that the global mineral exploration is in crisis, but mining companies can turn their exploration performance around. Finding orebodies is not all about luck and success is not unpredictable. And while some companies struggle to replace depleted reserves, those that act in a counter cyclical way that build world-class exploration capabilities will be rewarded with disproportionate returns, said The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) partner Alexander Koch, coauthor of a new report by the management consulting firm, titled Tackling the Crisis in Mineral Exploration.

Terence Creamer reports that the Worbank Commodity Markets Outlook cut its price outlook for oil this year to $37/bl, from a forecast of $51/bl in October. For non-energy commodities, the largest decline is expected in iron-ore prices, with the report forecasting a 25% decline in 2016, owing to reduced imports from China steel producers and new capacity in Australia and Brazil.

Iron-ore prices fell from an average of $96.9 per t in 2014 to $55.8 per t last year, with prices plunging 15% in the 4th quarter to average $47 per t. The price of the ferrous mineral fell to $41 per t in De... More →

Moody's opines that the current severe downturn in the mining industry represents a fundamental shift in the operating environment and that, as a consequence, a wholesale recalibration of ratings is required. As a result, on January 21 (2016), Moody's placed 55 companies in the base metal, precious metal, iron ore and coal industries rated between A1 and B3 under review for downgrade. While severity varies among issuers, all are impacted and many companies could be downgraded, some multiple notches. Moddy's broad review, which will be largely completed during the first quarter, will consider e... More →

Rod Webster opines that many mining companies are cutting exploration budgets to survive the current mining downturn and low commodity prices. As a result, some firms either do not have enough geological and support staff or they have inexperienced staff members who do not adequately understand the geology, mining method used and processing aspects of their operation or project. This can negatively impact the quality of Mineral Resource or Reserve estimates and statements as well as the preparation of long-term mine plans.

When a company lacks proper staffing, the quantity of the re... More →

Dave Coler reports that one of the key challenges to good XRF sample preparation is contamination. Contamination comes from two main sources ... the sample preparation device and sample to sample cross contamination.

Sample pulverizers are usually the sample preparation device that has the potential to contribute the most contamination to a sample. Pulverizers usually use a ring and puck style grinding bowl to grind samples from coarse chips to a fine powder. This grinding action can add various elements contained in the grinding vessel to a sample which is why one should be careful... More →

Greg Klein reports that newly released numbers offer a glimpse of how exploration money is being spent in Canada by location and commodity. The feds then compared their responses with figures going back to 2010. Not surprisingly, Canada is at a six-year low.

Total spending intentions for 2015 sunk to $1,879.8 million, almost 6.7% lower than last year and a nearly 56% plunge from 2011. This year the total drops down to $1,037.3 million for exploration and $842.5 million for deposit appraisal. Nearly $1.9 billion on 2015 Canadian exploration: Where goes the money? Dimitri A. Sverjensky and Fang Huang report that diamond formation has typically been attributed to redox reactions during precipitation from fluids or magmas. Either the oxidation of methane or the reduction of carbon dioxide has been suggested, based on simplistic models of deep fluids consisting of mixtures of dissolved neutral gas molecules without consideration of aqueous ions.

The role of pH changes associated with water-silicate rock interactions during diamond formation is unknown. They demonstrate that diamonds could form due to a drop in pH during water-rock interactions.... More →

NASA reports that the human body is incredibly complex. Every part of us ... from our bones to our blood cells ...is subject to a host of chemical reactions and molecular interactions that, without our conscious effort, keep us alive. But what happens to these processes when we leave the planet?

In Earth orbit and beyond, where gravity is counteracted by a constant state of freefall and cosmic radiation intensifies, the molecular inner-workings of the human body may change. To find out how, NASA has entered a realm of bio-research known as omics.

Babalwa Bungane reports that weak commodity prices, declining grades, and a fall-off in demand from China will continue the global mining sector downward cycle well into 2016. However, regulatory mandates, tax burdens and stakeholder expectations remain as high as ever. This is according to the Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu (via Deloitte Global) Tracking the Trends 2016 report.

Similar to the boom cycle, where people imagined prices would go up forever, people now imagine the market will never recover. Neither extreme represents the truth. What is true, however, is that cycle times are l... More →

Michael Allan McCrae reports that the legendary explorationist and geologist, Dave Lowell, has published a new book - Intrepid Explorer - The Autobiography of the World Best Mine Finder. He has a number of exploration rules that he follows -

1. Ore is rock which can mined at a profit. Low grade is sometimes mineable, and high grade is sometimes not.

2. Mines are found in the field, not the office

3. Mines are now almost always found by drilling holes, so if no part of the budget is spent on drilling there is almost no chance of success. (Pierina was the rare ex... More →

A new and controversial frontier in mining is opening up as a British firm joins a growing rush to exploit minerals in the depths of the oceans.

UK Seabed Resources is a subsidiary of the British arm of Lockheed Martin.

It has plans for a major prospecting operation in the Pacific.

The company says surveys have revealed huge numbers of so-called nodules - small lumps of rock rich in valuable metals - lying on the ocean floor south of Hawaii and west of Mexico.

The exact value of these resources is impossible to calculate reliably, but a leading UN of... More →

Hydrothermal ore deposits represent a convergence of fluid flow, thermal energy, and solute flux that is hydrogeologically unusual. From the hydrogeologic perspective, hydrothermal ore deposition represents a complex coupled-flow problem sufficiently complex that physically rigorous description of the coupled thermal (T), hydraulic (H), mechanical (M), and chemical (C) processes (THMC modeling) continues to challenge our computational ability. Though research into these coupled behaviors has found only a limited subset to be quantitatively tractable, it has yielded valuable insights into the w... More →
