ERA-MIN 2 aims to support the European Innovation Partnership on Raw Materials, the EU Raw Materials Initiative and further develop the raw materials sector in Europe through funding of transnational research and innovation (R&I) activities. This will be achieved through one co-funded call in 2017, as well as two additional calls in 2018 and in 2019, designed and developed specifically for the non-energy, non-agricultural raw materials sector.

The network will address four key objectives ...

1. Support and promote R&I cooperation in Europe,

2. Reduce f... More →

Ajoy K Das reports that India has awoken to the need to allow junior miners to play a greater role in mineral exploration and drive much-needed foreign investments in the sector. The Federation of Indian Mineral Industries - FIMI - has urged the government to frame a policy to promote junior exploration companies to attract foreign and domestic investment into the industry.

FIMI president Hukam Chand Daga said that mineral-rich countries like Canada, Australia, Brazil or Chile do not spend taxpayer money on mineral exploration which was fraught with risk. These countries with highly... More →

In 1972 NASA launched the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ETRS), now known as Landsat 1, and on February 11, 2013 launched Landsat 8. Currently the United States has collected 40 continuous years of satellite records of land remote sensing data from satellites similar to these. Even though this data is valuable to improving many different aspects of the country such as agriculture, homeland security, and disaster mitigation; the availability of this data for planning our nations future is at risk.

Thus, the Department of the Interiors (DOIs) U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reque... More →

Will Coetzer opines about the traits that make a successful leader in the mining industry. Enough has been written about leadership over the years to fill several libraries. Yet it has always astonished him how little has been written by people with the long-term track record of success to warrant being considered an authority.

Once one eliminates the learned tomes of academics and the rapidly published, slim volumes by the one-hit wonders, one is left with very few books that have stood the test of time. For every Good to Great, there is a hundred titles like Build Your Business th... More →

Lucapa Diamond Company Limited is preparing to commence the Lulo Diamond Concession in Angola. The aim of this 2-year program is to build on the positive exploration results to evaluate the known diamondiferous pipes at Lulo and explore for other possible kimberlite sources of the exceptional alluvial diamonds being mined after decades of trying to discover alluvial diamonds or kimberlite pipes. At Lulo, they have achieved both. They have already discovered an alluvial diamond field and two significant kimberlite provinces.

Mr Wetherall has confidence that they will find the primary... More →

Julian Turner opines that in 1987, an extinction event took place that went virtually unnoticed and unremarked upon outside of geological and mining circles. Now abandoned, the Ivigt mine once contained the largest known reserves of naturally occurring cryolite. First described in 1798, this mineral was primarily used in aluminium extraction, but also as an insecticide and pesticide, to make caustic soda and even to give fireworks a yellow color. And then in 1987 the mine simply ran out.

Its demise is a reminder of how susceptible mineral supplies are to the dynamics of global deman... More →

Moody's opines that the current severe downturn in the mining industry represents a fundamental shift in the operating environment and that, as a consequence, a wholesale recalibration of ratings is required. As a result, on January 21 (2016), Moody's placed 55 companies in the base metal, precious metal, iron ore and coal industries rated between A1 and B3 under review for downgrade. While severity varies among issuers, all are impacted and many companies could be downgraded, some multiple notches. Moddy's broad review, which will be largely completed during the first quarter, will consider e... More →

After almost two years of locking horns with the Papua New Guinea government over a project ownership, Canada-based Nautilus Minerals (TSX:NUS) is finally free to move forward with its pioneering plan to mine the seafloor.

The company, the first yet not the only one exploring the ocean floor for polymetallic massive sulphide deposits, said in a statement that the arbitrator has ruled that Papua New Guinea breached the contract signed in March 2011 under which the country optioned to acquire 30 percent of the Solwara 1 project, located in its territorial waters in the Bismarck Sea.More →

Greg Klein reports that newly released numbers offer a glimpse of how exploration money is being spent in Canada by location and commodity. The feds then compared their responses with figures going back to 2010. Not surprisingly, Canada is at a six-year low.

Total spending intentions for 2015 sunk to $1,879.8 million, almost 6.7% lower than last year and a nearly 56% plunge from 2011. This year the total drops down to $1,037.3 million for exploration and $842.5 million for deposit appraisal. Nearly $1.9 billion on 2015 Canadian exploration: Where goes the money? Michael Allan McCrae reports that the legendary explorationist and geologist, Dave Lowell, has published a new book - Intrepid Explorer - The Autobiography of the World Best Mine Finder. He has a number of exploration rules that he follows -

1. Ore is rock which can mined at a profit. Low grade is sometimes mineable, and high grade is sometimes not.

2. Mines are found in the field, not the office

3. Mines are now almost always found by drilling holes, so if no part of the budget is spent on drilling there is almost no chance of success. (Pierina was the rare ex... More →

The journal focus is on the mining and petroleum industries in Queensland. Its stories are of interest to those involved in these industries and those wishing to know more about how government helps mining to prosper in this state while at the same time balancing the state other interests, and how industry and government are working together.

Agar and Coulter (2007) report that the years between 1997 and 2007 saw significant advances in remote sensing technology for mineral exploration. The successful launch of the ASTER instrument in 1999 brought with it the ability to map mineral zoning and quartz occurrences within alteration systems. This took remote sensing from the age of the ambiguous TM anomaly into the age of mineral mapping from space. While ASTER has rapidly become the workhorse of geologic remote sensing, high spatial resolution satellite image and high spectral resolution airborne imaging have also advanced.

Edmund Nickless reports that the last 50 years saw a dramatic increase in living standards and improvement in the quality of life for many of the world poorest. Mortality rates fell, life expectancy rose, and per capita incomes swelled. That improvement has been underpinned by technological development and the ubiquitous use of metal and mineral resources. To maintain this trajectory while addressing climate change and rising world population, sustainable sources of raw materials are required, in both developed and developing countries.

Amongst mine surveying instruments, Azimuth Aligner positions itself as the only autonomous driller operated north seeking gyro device. This revolutionary device is a first to the mining, drilling, exploration and survey equipment industries, developed in-house by Downhole Surveys. The estimated worldwide total budget for nonferrous metals exploration dropped to $9.2 billion in 2015 from $11.4 billion in 2014, a 19% decrease and the lowest total since 2009. This analysis is based on information collected from nearly 3,500 mining and exploration companies worldwide, of which almost 1,800 had exploration budgets for 2015. The companies (each budgeting at least $100,000) budgeted a total of $8.77 billion for nonferrous exploration in 2015. The 2015 worldwide exploration budget totals $9.2 billion.

An eBook by Douglas W. Burbank, Department of Geosciences, The Pennsylvania State University, and Robert S.Anderson, Department of Earth Sciences, University of California, Santa Cruz.

The Authors Preface informs us that landscapes in tectonically active areas result from a complex integration of the effects of vertical and horizontal motions of various degrees of crustal rocks and erosion or deposition by surface processes. In a sense, many landscape can be thought of as as resulting from a competition among those processes acting to elevate the earth surface and those that tend to... More →
