Index / Mining & Minerals - Evaluations

Lucy Donald, a recruitment specialist for the mining industry, sees some significant changes over the next decade but definitely not an end to an industry that turned truly global before most others and has been in evidence for hundreds of years.

The sheer size of population growth and the speed of development in China and other Asian countries, combined with ongoing requirements in the developed world has created unprecedented demand for minerals and metals. The demand comes mainly from millions of aspiring individuals in emerging economies striving for a better standard of living ... More →

Henry Lazenby reports that while global economic growth came in at a disappointing 2.3% in 2016, and with growth for 2017 pegged at 2.5% and 2.7% for 2018, several analysts outlined bullish long-term scenarios for base and precious metals, pointing to growing supply gaps from 2020 onwards in key economic inputs.

There is some question whether the $1-trillion infrastructure plan promised by the new U.S. President will materialize, noting, however, that it paled in comparison with about $3-trillion in spending plans announced by China. He noted, moreover, that retaliatory measures cou... More →

Critical minerals and materials are key components of the innovation economy. Minerals are a part of almost every product we use on a daily basis, either as the raw materials for manufacturing processes or as the end products themselves. Advanced technologies for communications, clean energy, medical devices, and national security rely on raw materials from mines throughout the world. In 2010, China curtailed exports of rare earth metals and sparked major concern about the security of global supply chains for a range of vital minerals and materials.

Jonathan G. Price, President of the GSA, opines that our world is changing. Our science is increasingly global, as we recognize the challenges of understanding interconnected Earth systems, meeting the rising global demand for mineral and energy resources, handling tradeoffs regarding sustainable development, and reducing the risks of natural disasters that impact the global economy. The geosciences are vital to meeting these societal challenges. The future is bright for the geosciences, from many perspectives.

Demand is high for nearly every mineral and energy resource. This high d... More →

Deloitte CEO Glenn Ives says that increased costs and regulatory burdens alongside robust Asian demand will push the mining sector into a "revolution" of cleaner, cheaper energy inputs over the next 10-15 years. Ives spoke to Proactiveinvestors at the PDAC 2013 Conference in Toronto Canada last week, highlighting the trends that 50 Deloitte partners around the world have identified for the mining sector going forward.

As all miners well know, exploding operating and capital costs have diminished profits and sent handfuls of CEOs packing over the past year. Higher costs cou... More →

The More You Dig is a public awareness project brought to you by the Northwest Mining Association. The More You Dig is aimed at educating the public about how mining creates the lifestyle you enjoy daily. Without mining technology, we wouldn't have vehicles for transport, our homes would collapse, and we would be left in the cold and in the dark. Many of us don't realize how much of what we have comes from mining. Its time to realize mining is a beneficial and necessary part of our lives. The More You Dig, it all starts with mining.... More →

Jeff Desjardins reports that Canada has a reputation worldwide as the epicenter for mining exploration, and over the years the country junior-listed companies have created billions of dollars in wealth through new mineral discoveries. However, these days, Canada is home to a horror story that seems to haunt investors more each year .. 52% of all Canadian mining stocks are now zombies, and together the walking dead combine for a total of -$2.8 billion in negative working capital.

It was just over a year ago that Tony Simon, President of Seguro Consulting, brought to our attention the... More →

After preliminary exploration has been completed, the next step in the life cycle of a gold mine is resource definition. In resource definition, the exploration company has reason to believe that their property contains a mineral reserve. Therefore, the company will spend more money on intensive and technical exploration techniques.

The resource definition phase not only involves further analysis of the size and grade of the mineral reserve, but also uses engineering and geotechnical studies to evaluate the mining method and to estimate how much it will cost to extract the ore, give... More →

Gold and uranium stocks seem to have staged a useful recovery last week in Australia. There was a pleasing tone in gold and uranium thanks to higher underlying prices for both metals, but the rest of the mining market remained under pressure.

Overall, the ASX gold index added a handy 3.7 per cent last week, though that went only part of the way to recover the seven per cent lost in the previous week.

The mining and metals index, which has been hit hard by the slump in iron ore stocks, shed 2.5 per cent last week while the all ordinaries slipped 1.6 per cent lower.

The new SEG GeoQuiz provides a monthly opportunity for you to test your knowledge of economic geology by answering a question and identifying a sample from a well known ore district or mine.

Although identifying the minerals within a photo of a rock sample is difficult (if not impossible), the overall hand sample presentation is useful. Perhaps by adding a photomicrograph of each sample, this could help in the rock description.

Nina Morgan suggests that fieldwork can be made to come alive in the unlikely but convenient surroundings of city, suburban cemeteries, and home remodeling facilities selling cut and polished slabs for floors, kitchens, and bathrooms.

Fieldwork is expensive, difficult to arrange, requiring extra effort and dedication on the part of teaching staff, and given the availability of computers and satellite imagery to illustrate geology virtually anywhere in the world, ultimately, some would argue, unnecessary. These are just a few of the arguments used to justify reducing, or even elimin... More →

The code is therefore effectively 5 years old. The SAMREC WG has continued to review the code based on various issues or commentary from the greater extractive industry. In addition it is noted that since the last revision various CRIRSCO Codes have been revised.

The intention is to look at the various working papers and the updates from the other CRIRSCO Codes and include all the relevant changes in a revision to be pub... More →
