This is the Home page to the EPA remediation database called TechDirect. If anyone is interested in subscribing, you may do so on CLU-IN at https://clu-in.org/techdirect. All previous issues of TechDirect are archived there. The TechDirect messages of the past can be searched by keyword or can be viewed as individual issues.

The purpose of TechDirect is to identify new technical, policy and guidance resources related to the assessment and remediation of contaminated soil, sediments and groundwater.

Mention of non-EPA documents or presentationsis only an acknowledgment tha... More →

Reardon Environmental, Inc., now I2M-Reardon, is a Houston-based company that specializes in soil and groundwater remediation. The company has been remediating contaminated properties for more than ten years using innovative delivery systems capable of injecting liquid inoculants into soil to volatilize or break-down contaminants into harmless by-products.They indicate that they can reduce both the time and cost associated with clean-ups. Once the contaminated areas have been identified by employing the appropriate methods of investigation, their approach can avoid the costly dig and haul meth... More →

Becvar, et al., (2004) report that The DoD has identified hundreds of sites where groundwater is contaminated with chlorinated solvents. These represent one of the DoD largest remediation liabilities. In addition to their use in many industrial processes, chlorinated solvents have historically been used for cleaning and degreasing such diverse products as aircraft engines, automobile parts, electronic components, and clothing in the military and commercial sectors.

Chlorinated solvents were often released to the subsurface environment in waste water or in the form of dense non-aqueo... More →

Stu Hamilton, of the Hydrology Corner Blog, comments that a recommended read for anyone interested in uncertainty is Keith Beven (2015) Facets of Uncertainty - Epistemic Uncertainty, Non-stationarity, Likelihood, Hypothesis Testing, and Communication, a paper appearing the Hydrological Sciences Journal, DOI - 10.1080/02626667.2015.1031761.

There are many points that Keith Beven makes that Hamilton strongly agrees with, but he focuses on one question Beven uses as a section heading - Can we talk of confidence rather than uncertainty in model simulations? Keith Beven asks about model ... More →

Gerry Bulfin reports that iron is one of the earth most plentiful resources, making up at least 5% of the earth crust. In groundwater, iron is usually found as ferrous iron, which is in a dissolved state and may appear clear when first drawn from the tap.

When the level of iron in water exceeds the 0.3 mg per l limit, the water may have a red, brown, or yellow color and stain laundry and fixtures. The water may also have a metallic taste and an offensive odor. Water system distribution piping can become restricted or clogged, and for homeowners, appliances such as water heaters, dis... More →

USGS reports that chlorinated solvents have properties that make them useful for degreasing fats, oils, waxes, and resins. They are used widely and have been manufactured in large quantities. Some chlorinated solvents are dichloromethane, tetrachloroethene, trichloroethane, and tricholoroethene. The U.S. production of these compounds in 1980 were 255,000, 347,000, 314,000, and 121,000 metric tons, respectively.

Chlorinated solvents in general are harmful to human and ecological health. They can cause or are suspected of causing cancer, and are toxic or harmful to aquatic organisms. ... More →
