Index / Wind Energy / Related Environmental Issues

Sean Murphy reports that a decade ago, states offered wind-energy developers an open-armed embrace, envisioning a bright future for an industry that would offer cheap electricity, new jobs and steady income for large landowners, especially in rural areas with few other economic prospects. To ensure the opportunity did not slip away, lawmakers promised little or no regulation and generous tax breaks. But now that wind turbines stand tall across many parts of the windy heartland, some leaders in Oklahoma and other states fear their efforts succeeded too well, attracting an industry that gobbles ... This bird study is an example of biased reporting to surve a purpose. The author is obviously pro-wind power and anti-nuclear and fossile-fuel electric power generation. For example, the author quotes a study of a wind farm was over a 312 year period and there may be as many as just under 1 billion birds killed every year by conventional electrical generation plants (including nuclear). He also says that birds learn to avoid the wind generating towers after a couple of years, but they're constantly flying into power plant cooling towers and tall buildings.... More →

Robert Bryce reports that Gov. Cuomo wants New York to be getting 50% of its electricity from renewables by 2030. But if the ongoing battle over the proposed Lighthouse Wind project is any indication, Cuomo and his wind allies are in for a long fight upstate.

Three New York counties, Erie, Orleans and Niagara, as well as the towns of Yates and Somerset are all opposing the 200-megawatt Lighthouse project. If approved by state regulators, the project would install dozens of 500 to 600 foot high turbines on about 20,000 acres in Niagara and Orleans counties, both of which abut Lake On... More →

Ed Hiserodt reported that nuclear power is portrayed by the major media and by environmental activists as dangerous and perhaps even sinister. Wind power, on the other hand, is considered benign. But the track records of nuclear power and wind power present a different picture.

Nuclear power has been been used to produce electricity for more than four decades, beginning with the Shippingport nuclear power plant in 1957. Today there are 104 nuclear power plants in the U.S. generating some 60 billion kilowatt hours per year of electricity. There have been no deaths from radiation in m... More →
